چکیده

C atheter assessment of Starr-Edwards prosthetic aortic valve stenosis requires simultaneous recording of left ventricular (LV) and aortic pressures. Passage of conventional Dacron catheters across mechanical valves can damage the mechanism and induce valvar incompetence. The alternative Bockenbrough procedure requires atrial septal puncture with potential lethal complications. The availability of a low profile, floppy tipped, 0.014 inch guidewire mounted pressure sensor (PressureWire 4, RADI Medical Systems, Uppsala, Sweden) provides a novel means of crossing this type of valve. The use of fine bore pressure wires may be less likely to disturb the ball cage mechanism than larger fluid filled catheters, and may provide a safe and reproducible method of assessing Starr-Edwards aortic valve stenosis. However, the use of the pressure wire in assessing bileaflet or tilting disc prosthetic valves may be more problematic.

Double Valve Replacement (Mitral and Aortic) for Rheumatic Heart Disease: A 20-year experience with 300 patients.

Introduction: Rheumatic heart disease still remains one of the leading causes of congestive heart failure and death owing to valvular pathologies, in developing countries. Valve replacement still remains the treatment of choice in such patients. The aim of this study wasto analyze the postoperative outcome of  double valve replacement (Mitral and Aortic ) in patients of rheumatic heart disease. ...

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A Review Article

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a novel therapeutic intervention for the replacement of severely stenotic aortic valves in high-risk patients for standard surgical procedures. Since the initial PARTNER trial results, use of TAVR has been on the rise each year. New delivery methods and different valves have been developed and modified in order to promote the minimally invasive p...

Replacement of an aortic Starr-Edwards ball valve prosthesis 28 years after implantation.

A 53-year-old woman who had undergone aortic valve replacement with a Starr-Edwards (S-E) valve (Model 1260) and open mitral commissurotomy 28 years previously was hospitalized with cardiac failure. Echocardiography showed mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, and a normally functioning S-E prosthesis. At reoperation, the mitral and aortic valves were replaced with St Jude bileaflet mechanical...

Functional results with aortic ball valve prostheses (Starr-Edwards) followed for two to three years.

It is now believed that aortic insufficiency and calcific aortic stenosis must be treated with total valve replacement. Until recently this was performed with the aid of prostheses of teflon and similar materials. Even if the short-term results were promising, follow-up studies revealed a high percentage of breakdown of these prostheses (Bjork, Cullhed, and Lodin, 1963; Larson and Kirklin, 1964...

Three Different Imaging Modalities of a Patient with the Aortic Coarctation

The patient was a 19 year-old woman with the diagnosis of resistant hypertension, although she was under treatment of three classes of anti-hypertensive drugs (beta blocker, angiotensin receptor blocker, diuretic) for more than one year. In physical examination there was only a significant difference between the systolic blood pressure of upper and lower extremities (200 vs. 120 mmHg), without ...
